Re: Week eight; Marisol Zaragoza. October 21-27, 2013. Hello everyone, I would like to bring your attention to a headline that I am still trying to conceptualize; how did an inmate create a shank from a comb? Nonetheless, on September 9th, 2013, Abraham Pearson also known as Derrick White escaped from the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice; he used a comb fashioned into a shank to stab a deputy multiple times in the neck. After he stabbed the deputy, he took the deputy’s clothes and keys and escaped using the prisoner elevator. It was noted Pearson was scheduled to be sentenced in Wayne County Circuit Court to serve a possible 15 years in prison for carjacking and robbery against a fifty year old female. What measures do you think could have been implemented to prevent escape such as this incident? Additionally, what do you think would be a reasonable sentence for Pearson? http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/09/09/michigan-prisoner-escape/2786111/

  2. I think that his sentence was fair for his first offence on the carjack against the fifty year old women and his robbery. If they would ever find this suspect they should put him in for life without parole.

    1. I agree with you Alan, and I said the same thing about his sentence. Pearson First charge was set fair, but now Pearson needs to be charged life. He stabbed an officer, stole his uniform, and also escaped. Alan next time type a little bit more , so you can get a better grade. I’ll help you if you need it. I see that you’re maturing also. Good Job Alan. Keep up the good work.

    2. I also have too agree with you Alan. He is a repeated offender. He should get life without parole. He only had 15 now he just dug himself a deeper hole now what for. Hence 23 hour Lockup Supervised all day long because theres no guarantee he wont or any other prisoner wont try this again.

    3. I strongly agree as well. The punishment for his first offense was indeed reasonable. And as for murdering the officer, I would also give him life in prison. Scince he obviously had no remorse for his first and second crime

    4. I agree with you. Since being charged with previous offenses and assaulting the security guard and escaping from jail, he should definitely pay for his actions. This shows that he is indeed a danger to society and if he is willing to do this, imagine what else he could do if not arrested.

    5. I agree with you. The first sentence was reasonable for the carjacking and robbery, but he should have a higher sentence now. He murdered an officer by stabbing him to death and he should be punished. Because of his actions, I think it would be reasonable to give him life in prison.

    6. I strongly agree with you Alan. He should be sentenced life without parole. He should've served the 15 years he received for the carjacking and robbery but in my perspective because he stabbed the deputy, he should receive life to add to those charges. Police officers should keep a close eye on the inmates for incidents like these. Someone should have recognized him and reported him.

    7. Yes I agree he should be sentenced to life for attacking and killing the officer.

    8. I agree with you Alan. If he knew he only had 15 years in prison, why go and shank an officer? I think he deserves to spend the rest of his days sitting in a cell. Taking an officer's uniform is so disrespectful.

    9. All of this could have been provented if the guards had searcherd Pearson before he was taken in custody to go to court. It is dearly sad a poor deputy had to have his life taken in the process of Pearson escape ,but how could the other guards not recognized the man while he was dressed up the deputy's uniform . I think that there should be more precaution and searches on the prisoners.

    10. I agree with you Kristina. This is why guards should always check the inmates and pat them down or something before taking them anywhere. It also amazes is me how no one noticed it was Pearson. His first sentencing for carjacking and robbery were fair. Unfortunately for him, he's just dug a deeper hole for himself. He should get life in prison with no chance of parole for killing the guard and escaping.

  3. Well this is a very interesting topic Marisol. Prisoners always make weapons and try to cover up things. Police officers and security could have done a better job of watching the inmates come is sharp already, so I’m wondering why he evened have one. But inmates can make weapons out of anything. My uncle made a knife out of soap. So either way it go you should always expect the unexpected from them. They are criminals, but smart. The police officers should maximize their job and do what they have to do. Now somebody is hurt, and an inmate escaped. Pearson should have life in prison now without parole. Pearson already had some charges, because he robbed and carjacked an fifty year old woman. Now that he stabbed an officer, and took his identity and keys also escaped the prison. He stabbed the officer in the neck multiple times in the neck. So he is possibly in hospitalized or even not living at this point.

    1. I Agree with you Bianca these prisoners are smart but do tend to do reckless things. The guards should be on point the whole time their on duty because one slip up or encounter with a prisoner who is not worried about anything could cause serious bodily injury or even death. So I believe greater precautions should be taken. Too insure nothing like this would happen.

      Delete
    2. I agree with you. Security guards should really check to see what the inmates have on them to further prevent things like this from happening. Inmates will come up with ways to escape and the guards must be prepared for that.

      Delete
    3. I completely agree with you Bianca. Inmates can and do make weapons out of objects, such as a comb like the inmate had. Yes, the guards should have kept a more close eye on the inmates, but they didn't which resulted in the inmate making the shank. Like you said yourself Bianca, you have to be ready for anything.

      Delete
    4. I agree with you Bianca, we need to make sure that people are safe not only the officers, but also other inmates as well. It does not matter if there's any "invasion of privacy" the prisoners gave that up when they committed the crime.

    5. I agree with you, Bianca. The officers on duty should watch the inmates more carefully, because if not something like this may occur. Now an officer is wounded, and possibly dead because of negligence.

  4. This is a very fascinating topic. I would first like to point out in prison it is possible too create a shank from a comb. Locked up in a cell for along period of time with nothing to do it is possible that a prisoner could come up with a weapon. Although I feel the security should be looked at these are prisoners who have committed serious crimes shouldn’t it be more supervised. Looking at the prisoner’s background he wasn’t nowhere near learning from his mistakes. He turned 15 years to a possibility of life in prison without parole. Hence I believe that’s what he should get. As for the prison guard his life might not ever be the same that just shows how dangerous these prison guard jobs really are. Dealing with life’s who have nothing else too loose its pretty tough.

    1. I strongly agree with you Ashley Cabrera. The prisoners have so much time in there hands. That’s the reason that there are able to create weapons. Pearson did turned 15 years to a possibility of life in prison. To the officer his life is going to change dramatically.

    2. I agree, the prisoners do have a lot of time on their hands but he should've been searched. The seriousness off the crime should not determine how many times the inmates are checked, because once inside those four wall all they care about is survival. In their minds its either u or them and when they decided to escape because of lack of security no one is safe.

      Delete
    3. I agree with you Ashley, these prisoners have so much time to just sit there and weapons. Why was there lack of security though? I also agree that he should have been searched. This probably could have prevented this crime. Life in prison is what he deserved!

    4. I completely agree with you Ashley. Increasing the security with surveillance cameras and more guards will help allot more to prevent all these things from happening again. As for life in prison, i also agree with you. He did not learn from his mistakes and now he has to go face the consequences.

  5. In my perspective, prison guards should place security in every cell. This way, the inmates will be monitored at all times. Times are crazy, and the only solution seems to be invasion of privacy. We have to chose between freedom or safety. As far as sentencing, I would give him life in prison.

    2. I get that nowadays are a little hectic. But if we provided each and every inmate with its pesonal guard then we would not only be taking in a lot of resorces but indagering the lifes of the guards even more. Because if we assign each inmate a guard we won't have any more resorces to provide a partner for them. Leaveing them to fend for themselves if an inmate where to attack.

    3. Good point, maybe we should add a few more guards without over using our resorce, and impplement a new way of checking that inmates aren't creating weapons or anything harmful.

    4. I totally agree with you Juan. Placing security in every cell should be their top priority. Now that an officer was stabbed multiply times and had his identity taken they should reconsider their security system. Its either a life or privacy is how I see it. The sentence is on point.

I strongly disagree with you he should get life in prison, I have no doubt that if that deputy would have been relative to you you would not be saying what you are. You need to rethink what you stated.

I don't think he should get out with parole, he deserves it. How ever i think that they should increase security in prisons. Every prisoner should be very well watched by a security guard so that prisoners will be watched all the time. So we can make sure none of this ever happens again.

  8. I really wish I could say that this is really supriseing and that I can't beleive thing like this could happen. But unfortunately it happens. Yes there are ways that things like this could have a less probable chance to happen. Like maybe have all inmates come to a single room indivisualy to use a comb, thootbrush, or anything while supervised by officers. That way they don't have anything they could make into a weapon. Or maybe have inmates do something useful with their time that way they won't be tempted to create a weapon. After all idle hands are the devils hands. As for Pearson I would give him life in prison because he obviously has no remorse, and a danger to society.

    1. I agree, the inmate should have an extended sentence. Although the question still remains how was he able to form a shank without any guards noticing him. I gather that it takes a lot of time to transform a comb into a shank and inmates are constantly being guarded. I believe that there are some dirty staff members involved.

    2. I agree with you, the guards should be more attentive to their surroundings. They should visit every inmate and search every inch of their cell, so that they will find the weapon ahead of time. However, I believe that Pearson should get life in prison because the officer could have died due to the stabbings to the neck.

  13. Reading this I can not help but wonder why he had a comb in the first place. Prisoners are suppose to have frequent searches of themselves and there bunks. There should have been no reason that the inmate was able to have a comb so that he could make a shank. He obviously was either helped or not checked thoroughly, and for that matter it's the staff who is at fault.

In my opinion, to prevent escaping is to upgrade security, and watched by police officer every time with surveillance cameras in the area. Also should have personal things checked every time. There should be more police officers on duty and better security to prevent from inmates escaping.

  15. Although there are many ways to create good and bad objects I feel prisoners should be checked a lot often. Easy procedures that can be done are led to situations like this. The security system needs to be more upgraded and checked frequently. Items that are needed should be used individually in a room were they are being watched and taken up afterwards. The police should be more cautious of themselves and their surroundings, so nothing like this would happen again. On the other hand, every officer should know every other officer especially by futures and actually know the difference between inmates and officers. Abraham Pearson should be sentenced to 55 years of prison without parole reason being, he doesn't deserve parole when he already escaped the first time.

There has to be no reason why an inmate should be able to have in their possession an item that can cause the death of some one else. There can be no real measures of what we can do to ensure safety in a correctional facility. The inmates will always find another way of trying to hurt someone for any reason. Should have been taken into consideration. It truly is a shame that a Deputy was hurt. Inmates have so much time on their hands to make just about anything while incarcerated. The identification cards that lesley brought up are an excellent idea. If Pearson was able to walk about the the prison and impersonate the deputy then the prison should have cards to past certain locatios throughout the facility. With the Officers information and picture identification card.

    1. I most defiantly agree with Valerie and Lesile, having identification cards would be a very smart way to control the jail. I also agree about the fact that they should have taken more precautions knowing the fact that the inmate had a violent record.

    2. I agree with you Valerie, that the charges was reasonable for the first crime. Yes there is something wrong with that prison if an inmate can easily kill and walk out of prison. The government needs to go and change a lot of things in that prison. Also they need to add more officers to that prison. The whole thing with the identification cards are good and also adding like fingerprint door opener. That might could of help.

    3. Indeed, I agree with you Valerie. The fact that the inmate is violent should have been taken in consideration. Maybe different methods could have been applied when it came to this inmate. Also, the identification cards would be a great idea.

    4. I like that idea about identification cards. It would have helped prevent the escape from the inmate. It's crazy how Pearson could just walk out! They really do need to up their security or else another incident like this one might happen.

  25. I frankly believe that his sentence was fair for his first offence on the carjack against the fifty year old women and his robbery. If they would ever find this suspect they should put him in for life without parole. Regardless of what the officer was doing at the time of the stabbing, there should have been another officer with him.

  26. My perspective, prison guards should place security in every cell. This way, the inmates will be monitored at all times. Times are crazy, and the only solution seems to be invasion of privacy. We have to chose between freedom or safety. As far as sentencing, I would give him life in prison.

  27. Having two police officers going to check up on the inmates could have probably prevented this event. It would have been harder to eliminate two officers than one. The first sentence he received was reasonable for the crime he committed. Now that he committed an abhorrent crime; he should receive around 40 years prison.

    1. Two police officers on duty would help a lot! This probably would have prevented the whole situation. They shouldn't have let one officer alone with all the inmates. I agree that the original sentencing was reasonable. After the stabbing, I think 40 years also seems reasonable.

    2. I agree Zaira, two guards being present could have prevented the whole situation His original sentence was reasonable and he could have just gone through with it instead of having the possible 40 years or even life in prison for the stabbing of the guard, impersonating a guard and escaping prison.

  28. I can honestly say that this is not surprising to me. You have to see that these inmates want freedom and they would do anything to get out of prison. All of the inmates have access to combs, thootbrush, or anything to have. They would use these items for protection from other inmates. But in that situation this man thought of freedom with no kind of fear of killing a man. In my perspective the first charge Pearson received for carjacking and robbery was reasonable but now for stabbing that deputy he should receive life without parole. I know that they search inmate but I wonder how come there was only one deputy with this inmate. Especially since prisoners do have so much time in there hands they are able to create weapons.

But first I would like him to at least serve time for the first crime then go to death penalty. Also to prevent things like this from happening we need to increase protection in the prison.

  29. I am astonished by this, even though I have herd of such incident. It is still very shocking that the court or jail systems haven't done anything to cause less deaths like this. What I would do to prevent this would be to send more than one deputy to get the inmate that way if things go bad you have your back up there to help you out. Marizol didn't inform us if the deputy died, but multiple stabbings to the neck kind of makes it obvious that he did. Never the less the punishment I would give this inmate would be life in prison with out parole.

  30. In my opinion, I believe they should be more prison guards to prevent what happen. Also they should do unexpected checkups on what the prisoners have in their cells. The reasonable sentence for Pearson should be about 50 years, because if he robbed and carjack before stabbing. Probably next time he doesn't stab or rob probably he can even kill the victim.

Also, if we have any prison guard they should do a better job by checking the inmates at all time for their safety and the safety of others. Inmates are smart that they could create any implement out of anything.

  31. From my point of view I think that they should keep any objects that inmates might use as a weapon away from them because inmates could use anything to create weapons such as shanks. And about the prisoner escaping if it was only one guard, then they need to have more guards escorting him not one. If they catch him he ain't gonna get 15 years, he is gonna get life in prison without parole

    1. You cannot possibly keep everything that an inmate can use as a weapon away form him. With an idle mind one can come up with the craziest ideas, that might just work. One can use pants to strangle someone, one can break the leg of a bed and forge it into a spear. It would take time to turn some objects into weapons, but if anyone has time, it's an inmate that locked up for life without chance of parole.

The sentence seems harsh unless death had occurred but 20yrs sounds like a fair amount of years.

This isn't fair, they're hurting innocent people just because. They should honestly increase the security. They just can't let inmates get away that easy. If one inmate is successful escaping then the rest will try. A reasonable sentence for Pearson would be life in prison, what he did wasn't right.

Each immate should receive a strip check daily. 43. He is a repeated offender and should definitely get life in prison or the death penalty. Pearson’s first sentence was reasonable, but now he stabbed and killed a deputy. He is incapable from learning from his mistakes and a threat to society. Pearson was probably angry that he had to serve 15 years from his previous crime, so he let it out on a deputy. He was probably planning this for quite a while and he really knew what he was doing. Since the criminals have so much free time in their cells, they will try to make things and plan their escape. The criminals are not dumb and they observe everything. The police could have prevented this from happening if there were more deputies watching Pearson. They need a larger security group to prevent from someone getting hurt again. They should have had police monitoring Pearson’s every move.

So to be honest we have to remember that these are very intelligent individuals ,and they have nothing but time to find another way to escape. Some of these criminals IQ levels are very high ,and they can basically use almost anything to make a weapon .To be honest the only thing I can say for the deputy's working at the prison is to be very observant, but to be honest this is the risk they take everyday .Working at these prisons ,but that doesn't justify the death of that deputy. So I would give him the death penalty to make sure this incident never happens again ,because apparently he has proven himself to be unsafe for society.

  47. In my opinion he should be imprisoned for life because he was a repeated offender. Offenders should have a nightly check up, such as stripping down the whole bunk as well as themselves making sure they have nothing there not suppose to. Each time the offenders would like to go somewhere as well as morning and afternoon they should be checked at all times, not for there safety but for everyone's. The prisoners should not be able to know the secret exits. All exits in the prison should be protected as well as guarded at all times through out the day.

Also deputies should have a tracking device on them so if one of them gets hurt they’ll be notified right away. As they are very tricky in creating implement materials. Also, the officer should always be alert and not to trust any inmates. Knowing that criminals are capable of mastermind crimes there is no surprise when a criminal tries to give a fight to a guard on duty, not only did a crime accrued but, there were two crimes committed. The question that should be asked is how did Pearson actually have a significant good amount of space to actually shank the guard multiple times. There should have been at least another guard on duty to make sure everything was okay. Pearson not only committed a crime before this incident but, know should be facing the life in prison or even death row. In my opinion, Pearson should get the death penalty.

  62. Wow, why am I not surprised. This is a very interesting article Marisol. I surely don't understand why Pearson also known as Derrick White did that. To be honest 15 years is much better than what he's going to get now. Then again his own family said he wasn't right mentally so therefore he just needs help. The fact that the police officer didn't have anyone else monitoring him is highly unacceptable. Don't they know they're prisoners and that they should be aware of everything surrounding them 100% of the time? I also think that the police officers doing check ups or anything in particular should do them at random times that way they won't be able to plan anything in specific because now they won't know the daily routine. I definitely think pearson should receive 75 years in prison with no parole. I think it's reasonable because like I had said 15 years wasn't that bad the fact that he didn't think before taking action was a big mistake for pearson.

    1. I agree with you 100% Jose. He should get the death penalty because he committed a crime with in a crime. First he stabbed the guard, took his clothes, then escaped! That is more than enough reasons to give him the death penalty and he deserves it.

  65. Wow, interesting topic In deed, how did he fashion a comb into a weapon fot stabbing is my question. In my opinion I think there shouldn't only be one deputy watching the prisoners . There could atleast be 3 of them, that way alot of things can be prevented. As for his time he deserves 99 years in prison meaning life, with out parole not only for butchering that deputy. Also for carjacking and comitting robbery to a poor 50 year old woman.

    1. Your definitely right, there should of been other deputies watching the prisoners. This shouldn't of happened if the security was stricter. Also this sentence he deserves is life in prison for his crime.

  66. I think the fifteen year sentence he received from car jacking that fifty year old women fit the crime. I don't understand why he was allowed to have a comb inside of the prison. We know how criminals think they will find a way to make anything into a weapon and making a comb into a knife is extremely easy to do. They should be more cautious for future reference.

    1. In also agreeing with you Josh, its scary enough that a comb becomes such a painful weapon where the security didn't know. I also want to point out that how are they suppose to be cautious? What are they ways in being cautious enough to prevent an object to into a harmful weapon?

  67. I agree with you on how easy it is to make a weapon out of anything. Now I believe that all prisons are going to take production around inmates.

  68. Abraham Pearson’s sentence was fair for car jacking a fifty year old but now that he has committed this crime he deserves life in prison no parole. This is so shocking that Person was able to escape using the deputy’s clothes and keys without anyone noticing. Security become stricter with deputies coming in and out of the Frank Murphy Hall

    1. In agreeing with you Vannesa, security should be strict enough. By the cause of this Abraham Pearson 15 year sentenced should now be life in prison.

  69. This is shocking to hear that an inmate killed an an innocent police officer with just a comb. Somehow for these types of circumstance the police officers watching or guarding the prison cell of the inmates should at least check on them to see if they're up to something. I cant but to bare enough how a comb became a deadly weapon in costing someones life. As for Pearson I would give him life in prison because he obviously has no remorse, and a danger to society.

    1. Yes is it very shocking but like Ms. Harrell always says " An idle mind is the devils workshop". Inmates are just hungry to escape and will think and so anything to do it. I agree with you Javier he should get life I'm prison.

  70. I am not surprised one bit about the comb that was fashioned into a shank, I have heard of toothbrushes, screwdrivers, spoons, and even bones that were forged into shanks. Inmates have a lot of free time, and like Mrs. Harrel says, "An idle mind is the devil's workshop." With all that spare time inmates can think up of very crazy ways to shave off a few years of their sentences. Anyone with sand paper, a toothbrush an lots of time can create a shank. What surprises me is that no one saw the guard get stabbed. From my understanding one guard takes care of a block, their the only ones there, but shouldn't they have surveillance cameras? One surveillance camera would have suffice to supervise the block that inmate was in and would have easily prevented the incident.

    1. Your so right Miguel, since they have so much free time they can think about just anything or everything. Its just crazy how there is so much madness around in this world. There should be a policy of keeping those inmates busy doing something rather than just nothing and thinking of ways to kill.

  71. This man is crazy , him making a shank out of a comb has left me cryptic. Wow , no doubt these criminals are starving to get out of prisonI so agree his first sentenced is fair, but I think he should get an additional of 60 years in prison. Not only did he murder a police officer but he as well car jacked and robbed a poor 50 year old woman. I really hope this is a wake up call to all police officers to come up with better ways to watch immates.

  72. Wow. I never knew you could transform an ordinary comb into a deadly weapon. It suprises me how he managed to do that in prison, a place where there's suppose to be high security and what not. The other thing that gets to me is how no one saw him do this and didn't notice that the "guard" was Pearson. It's like my peer Miguel says. Isn't there suppose to be cameras and people always watching them? Pearson's first sentencing fits his crime though I think I would've given him a bit longer. Since now he's gone to the extent of taking someone's life and escaped prison, he should get life in prison with no chance of parole. He seems like a dangerous man who needs to be put away from the public.

  73. I think that its the prisons fault for Pearson's escape. It doesn't matter what the people are wearing when they exit the building, they should do a identity confirmation on everyone leaving including the deputy's. Yes, he 15 years in prison was a good punishment for carjacking but, in this case I would give him life in prison with the death penalty.

  74. Things that could have been implemented to prevent an escape such as this one should be more than one officer to an inmate, more security to the building, and people paying attention to their surroundings and acquaintances. If there was more than one officer to an inmate the stabbing would have never happened due to at least one of the officers paying attention to detail and handling procedures well. Also had there been more security then the prisoner wouldn't have made it out of the building because the security would have noticed, which takes me to the other thing that is people paying attention to their surroundings and acquaintances. Some one should have noticed that the inmate was not officer Tolliver there is obviously an age difference (inmate 25, officer 63). I believe Pearson should receive the full punishment of his sanction without parole due to him being a habitual felon and him proving himself to be a menace to society.
