Re: Jackie Magana week thirteen; February 24- 28, 2014.

On February 25, 2014, six police officers including their police chief were arrested for their role in preying/ targeting poor drivers in the state California. Hence, prosecutors in a rural California agricultural community said the police officers preyed upon the poor i.e. by impounding their cars as well as selling the vehicles when the owners could not afford the impounding fees. Sergeant Carrillo impounded over 200 cars and was found to be targeting poor Latinos individuals which he knew would not be able to afford the cost associated as it relates to impounding fees etc.
Many of the cars and trucks were sold by officers and many of them also kept other vehicles for personal use. The F.B.I. aided in the investigation as well as arrests. Henceforth, the defendants were arraigned on Monday, February 24, 2014, resulting in a closure of the police department’s business office because of the arrest of so many police officers/ civilians. There are additionally details which will be released before or during the trial.  After reviewing this article I have several observations but I would like to note the following questions:
1.  Do you think the officers involved should be punished based on their respective role in this incident or should all receive the same punishment?

2.  Do you think they should receive a harsher punishment due to their racial profiling as it relates to pursuing Latinos that were poor and uneducated?

  1. I think the officers involved should all get the same punishment. In my opinion, it doesn't matter what role they had because they were all in on it and they all knew what they were doing. It isn't fair for some officers to have a smaller sentence then others when all of them had a part in the case. As for the punishment, I strongly believe that the punishment should be harsher simply because the officers singled a specific race out. The victims were poor, uneducated, and were taken advantage of and the officers should get a harsh punishment. It would only be fair to the victims if the officers get the punishment they deserve.

    1. I agree with you Jio. I said the same thing about the punishment. Also the role doesn’t matter. The Officers that might have played the small might go back out and do a crime bigger than that just to show people he can be the boss too. They did sign a specific race out, which was Latinos. But not of their own race. Yeah it’s a Hate crime so they should get charged more Jio

    2. i agree they should be punished but the one who was more involved should be punished the ,most for discremanation and for doing that to poor lationos and others

    3. I strongly agree , ill go with the same punishment you mention. That polce sign a specific race out, which was latinos. So it's more as like a race's reaction.

    4. I agree,i think they should get punished the same way. I agree that it isnt fair to treat people different just because their latinos or black etc.The victims were taken advantage of in everyway.

    5. I agree with you because I also believe they should recieve the same punishments because they were both involved in the same roles as accomplices. They shouldn't arrest and discriminate people because of a certain race.

    7. I strongly agree with you Jiovanna. These officers deserve the same hash punishment. It does not matter what role they had because they were still involved in the incident. I also believe they all know what they were doing and they should have put a stop to it.

    8. I Agree with you Jiovanna, the officers and the police chief should be severely punished not only for racially discriminating the victims but also doing so for doing so toward their own gain. however I am not sure if the punishment for each officer including the chief should be exactly the same. I believe if investigation shows that one individual showed more participation in the issue they should receive a larger sentence (not saying the others involve should be cut any slack).

    9. I truly agree with you, these officers should receive the same punishment they deserve whether they did a big part or little part of the act, they were still accountable for their own actions, especially since they were targeting a single race of Latinos that are poor or uneducated which is highly unnecessary.

    10. I truly agree with you, all the officers should receive the same punishment; it doesn’t matter if they had a big role or not, they all participated in the crime. And they should really receive a harsher punishment for targeting poor, uneducated Latino's that knew they could not be able to pay the fee to impound their vehicle.

    11. I agree with you, Jiovanna because all officers should get the same punishment since they all knew what they were doing and aware of this situation. They all knew what they were getting into and as officers they should have knew better and done better.

    12. I agree with you, it does not matter if you are a officer or not an officer. Everyone should get the same punishment. They are all accountable for their own actions. I think it's very wrong to stop Latino’s just because they are Latino’s, I think that very unnecessary.

  2. All the officers knew they will get in Major trouble for doing all of this .So why give them a different punishment. They all worked together to do this to the poor drivers and did it to multiple people. Yes they shouldn’t make any difference. Its should be considered a hate crime because these are police officers that are white doing this to low income Latinos. I’m also glad they shut down that facility. That’s just like African American man being hooked on the back of that truck and the white men drugged him down the road for 3 miles. It shouldn’t matter what role they played. They are Police officers and should know not to be doing something like that or for extra money on the side. They might have done more to those cars or people. So a harsher punishment will be suitable for those officers. For their Racial profiling, because they got all poor driver Latinos. The punishment won’t be that bad, because the officers are Caucasian.

Making all civilians feel unsafe not only from criminals but from police officials as well. They need to be taught a harsh lesson.

    4. I agree, the Latin/Latino/Hispanic community are profiled for many reasons mostly due to economic and immigration issues and the law enforcement community and legal system know this and the way it was used to take their vehicles by everyone involved showed a complete disrespect for their citizens, community, office, and families. They were only thinking of taking from the poor & thinking they wouldn't get caught. A silent voice stood up.

I agree with you because instead of them trying to get money from the poor Latinos they should be helping because that's why they choose to do this job; and it's to protect and keep the citizens safe. They should get the same punishment because it’s unethical from police officers to do this. Also no matter what they did; they were part of this crime and they deserve the same punishment.

  3. I believe that the officers should get the same punishment because they all played a role in this incident. They were aware of their actions and should all have harsh punishments. One for abusing their authority second for single out only one race singling the them out and taking their property. Hence they should all be punished for their crime with the same sentencing so they can try to learn from their mistakes and maybe even change their perspective on other races.

Its good riddance to them for such racial ways to these people because of their race. They currently don't know their role as being police officers. Their supposed to be people in helping the community not terrorize in habitually taking ones vehicle of their race

There officers are somebody you look to for the need of help not to recognize them to terrorize a community just because of there race.

    4. I am going to agree with Zaira on this. It is not because of their race. It is easy to get on some Latinos because they tend to be immigrants, and they fear the law.

  25. I think all the officers involved in this crime should be punished the same no matter what there role was. I do believe they should have received a harsher punishment, such as being removed from the legal system and what I mean by that is that he/she should no longer be able to work as an officer. These are people we trust our lives with, people we look to when we need help settling a problem out of our own control. How can we do any of those things when we have officers being racist? An officer should be a person who follows the law, not who consider arresting poor Latinos and selling there vehicles amusing. No matter what there role was in this crime they deserved a harsher punishment. They are officers of the law, which should be the ones to set an example and for a whole office of law enforcement to be racial profiling is just simply not right.

  26. I believe that just because one of them did a minor offence then the other they should not all receive one smaller or larger sentence, they all should get the equal punishment. All of the suspects knew what they were doing it was not like if they were brain washed to commit the crime. All suspects were very conscious and knew their role in the crime. As for the second question they should get harsher punishment since they were targeting one specific race “Latinos”. Not only were they targeted because they are Latinos, but because they knew they did not have money and they were not educated properly. Just comes to my mid of how officers take advantage of their authority.

    2. I agree, just because some of the officers took advantage of less Latinos than the others, does not mean they should get a smaller sentence. These victims were defenseless and could not protect themselves because they did not know the law. Basically, they were the perfect target because they were poor and uneducated. Therefore, they should all receive the same sentence.

    3. I agree with you, Angel. These officers should really be punish for all the wrong they committed. Just because they're police doesn't mean their punishment should be less than what a regular person would get. Everyone is the same under the law.

    4. I agree, they should get a larger equal punishment a regular person will get because they knew what they were doing was a crime and knew the consequences. They took advantage of the poor Latino’s.

  27. I believe these police officers should be charged the same because no ones role is bigger than the other they all committed the same crime. The Fact that they were all police officers which means they indoutably knew the law .This is why our society is corrupt today we trust these officers to enforce the law, but instead of them stopping criminals they are becoming the perpetrators themselves. So yes, I do believe they should receive a more harsh punishment due to the fact that they took a oath to become an officer and stop illegal activity not become a part of it. They were abusing their authority, and making other officers that actually do their job look bad. The fact that these police officers only picked on poor individuals that are predominately Latino. Leads me to believe that they are sending a message out there that all Latinos are poor .So it sounds like they were stereotyping against Latinos. Hence I believe that all these officers should receive a harsh punishment in addition they should all receive the same sentence, because they all knew exactly what they were doing due to their line of duty in the criminal justice field.

In reality they are still human so they should get a reasonable punishment. They abused their authority and they should pay the price for racial profiling. In my opinion, I think they found it as a game to see who would arrest the most Latinos and sell the most vehicles. The Latinos were the perfect prey because they were poor and uneducated. Therefore, they would not have any knowledge of the law and would not have money to pay the fines. They were most likely influenced by one person to do this hate crime. We would expect law enforcement to be there to aid us when we are being taken advantage of and never expect them to be the ones taking advantage. What these officers did isn't just wrong but unethical. Using their title to take advantage of people they know won't be able to defend themselves is pathetic. Therefore, I believe the officers should receive a greater punishment than any ordinary civilian would in this case. 66. 1.) I believe that each officer should receive individual punishment. Yes, they all played the same role however they might have not impounded the amount of vehicles each one of them. Were the six police officers acting upon agreement? If so then they should all divide the equal amount of punishment among each other.
2.) The use of racial profiling is illegal. These six police officer, know that due to the fact that they work for law enforcement. Therefore, they should be punished strictly for dishonoring the U.S. law. They should be punished as for what they are and what they did disregard their race or what they were before they committed this crime.

  67. I believe that the men involved in this racial profiling crime should all be given the same sentencing. They were all a part of depicting the victims knowing how helpless they were economically. However, they should not receive as harsh of a punishment. I think that this was an unjust thing to do, but not to the point to make it a harsh punishment.

    1. yes I agree with you lourdes because I also belive that the officers were being racist. they should also be convicted for the same crime because they knew what they were doing was wrong. Plus they were all police officer and were being unethical.

  68. These officers knew what action, they were up to. Taking and selling over 200 cars when owners couldn’t afford the cars. They should be punished over all of the crime they have done. It should be charged as if a normal citizen had done this crime. Just because , they were a part of the crime.

  69. I believe that the officers were very wrong because of their wrong doing of targeting poor Latinos that could not afford to take their vehicles out of the impound so that would make it a win situation for the police officers and used the vehicles to make profits for themselves. I believe each officer should be punished for their individual wrong doings because some police officers might not have done as wrong as the others. I also believe they should be punished additionally for racially profiling the Latinos.

  70. I agree with you alex, the officers should be equally punished for their crimes. the officers were wrong for targeting poor latinos that didnt have a chance at what was being done to them as far as getting their vehicles impounded and not having enough money to get them out.

  71. I believe that "officers" that abuse authority is wrong and they should get punished for doing those kinds of things. The thing about targeting Latinos is wrong too. People know that Latinos don't have good paid jobs and know that Latinos won't make do nothing because they are scared.

  73. 1.) I think that each police officer should be punished based on their role in this incident. The officer that came up with this idea should get a harsher punishment than the rest.
2.) I think that the police officers should get a harsher punishment because racism is a big deal in today’s society. I also believe that they should get their badges taken away from them.

  74. I agree with you Aide, they should all get the same punishment for committing the same crime. I also agree with you that the officers badges should get removed.

  75. .In my point of view i see that the officers were just doing their jobs by protecting the public. in other words the police accused of taking up over 200 cars should be given some time behind bars for their cruel actions. cruel about this is that they would take up poor looking Latino family’s vehicles knowing they most likely will not be able to afford the impound lot fees.
