Re: Week thirteen; Jonathan Ramos.

Hello everyone,

Welcome to week thirteen of the blogs. Have a awesome weekend!!

SOUTH PASADENA, CA --

The quick thinking of a nine-year-old South Pasadena boy helped save his three-year-old sister's life when she was choking on a grape. The boy and the paramedics who responded to his 911 call were honored at a news conference on Thursday. The incident was used as a lesson on choking hazards. Yaleona Santos' snack time became a life-threatening emergency as a grape slipped down her trachea.

Question: Do you think younger children nowadays are more experience in using 911?

Why our why not?

  1. I think it really depends on the child's cultural background. For example if the child were to be Caucasian from a well of family, then they would have no problem contacting the police. But if someone from a minority group needed help from police officials then they'd be more hesitant to contact them. Although they'd be more hesitant I think they would still call the cops if it was a real emergency. So overeall I do think that nowadays, younger children are more experienced in using 911.

    1. I have never heard about how a cultural background can help save someone's life. As you say a caucasian will have a easier way to contact the authorities is not all true. We have caucasian people that sit in bad poverty also and dont even like the authorities. We also have religious beliefs that can tie into separating each other. I do agree on how children know how to use 911.

    2. I do see where your coming from with the cultural background thing . Alot of people in minority group probably would think calling over choking on a grape can be thought of a joke . But it shouldn't have to be looked at it by that way .

    3. I do not think it depends on the children cultural background. It all depends how much the parents teach the children about safety.

    4. I do not think it depends on the child's background. We should teach our children about how to call 9-1-1 , but we as well need to let them know that's only if something bad was to happen .

    5. I disagree with you I don’t believe it has nothing to do with the children’s background. I believe parents should teach their children how to call 911 for an emergency no matter what type of child it is.

      Delete
    6. I totally disagree. I don’t really think the child’s background really matters on contacting the police. I think it depends if the children’s parents taught them how to contact 911. But the children now a days seem to be learning how to use technology pretty fast so it shouldn’t be a problem for them to contact 911.

    7. I totally understand what you’re trying to say. You didn’t mean to put the race thing out there but you actually meant to say that it really depends on the child’s economic status. There are poor and rich people out there from all kinds of races. There is poor African Americans, Caucasian, and Hispanic, as well as there is rich African Americans, Caucasian, and Hispanic. So there income status does make a difference on if the child would be able to reach the technology fast enough or even at all to make a 911 call.

    8. I personally don't believe that their cultural background has anything to do with being able to call 911. I don't agree with you at all because it depends if they even know how to dial 911.

    9. I don't think that a childs ethnic background has anything to do with learning how to call the police especially at a young age. I think it depends on how the parents of the child raised them and if they taught the child to call the police in case of an emergency.

    10. I most likely disagree with you with you; I believe your statement was very irrelevant to this topic. Children do not need a background check in order to know or call 911. A child’s ethnic does not matter a good parent will teach their children how to call for help to 911, however it is not required so many parents do not care and don’t even bother to think about teaching their children

    11. I agree with you Erika. It doesn't matter where the child comes from or where they live. Any parent that desires to keep their children safe will teach them to do the right thing. I know I would teach to my children how to use 911 if a burglar was ever trying to break in or even something as simple as choking on a grape.

  2. I do believe that children are getting more experience in using 911. We do have problems with younger children. We are seeing children getting lost and dont know their parents name. We should teach our younger generation to learn what to do in case of an emergency. So yes I do believe that younger children know how to call 911. We all teach them how to be safe and how to learn to use the phone.

    2. Yes, I agree the younger generation is more experienced with calling 911. As a reply to your comment on my main post, I'd like to say that I didn't mean it that way. I didn't mean to be stereotypical, because I know there are poor white people. I just meant that as an example. It's just that sometomes children learn to fear cops because they see that their parents hide from them.

    3. I agree with you Crystal, we should teach our children what to do in case of an emergency only if it’s an emergency because children are starting to use electronic, but when incident occur they will not know what to do so is best to teach them how to call 911 for an emergency. Also I agree if they get lost and don’t know where their parents at or what’s their number is best to teach them who can they contact to.

    4. I strongly agree with you Crystal Charles. We should teach our younger generation what to do in case of an emergency. We should explain to them from an emergency and non emergency. That way they will know the right time to call 911. They could be in a situation where they don’t know what to do and this is why it’s important to explain to them about calling 911 for an emergency.

    6. You are so right Crystal, crimes are getting tough out there and children needs to learn to use communication for 911 calls, also the parents should teach their children to know which is a emergency and what is not an emergency. These teachings to children can really help families become more safe.

  4. Juanita,

Thanks for interjecting your perspective and you are right; the children in our society are definitely acclimated as it relates to 911 and the reason for this service. Nonetheless, smaller children know the consequences if they prank call 911, so most of the calls are typically warranted due to an emergency.

Additionally, Juanita thanks for being the first of many to respond to the blog fir this week.

  5. I'm not really surprised that the young boy knew what to do . kids now in days know what to do .so The fact that he called 9-1-1 was great . We as humans have grown . Each generation gets more advanced then what the last generation was. My question is where we're the parents during this incident .why did he have to call and his parent I'm just glad that the boy as able to respond and know what to do . I'm sure his sister is thankful for him now .

    1. Well maybe the parents had left them to have their snack time. While they went to finish something they needed to do. Scince they proably didn't think snack time would endanger their children's life. But your right if the boy had enough time to call the cops and save his sisters life, why hadn't the parents noticed?

    2. I looked into what happened come to find out she was there when her child was choking. Jennifer Santos saw her three-year-old daughter hopping up and down in distress and then the toddler started fading in and out of consciousness. The mother didnt know what to do in that time frame. Now, her mother has learned that grapes and hot dogs are major choking hazards. She says she is going to take a first-aid class to learn more. I agree that the sister will be grateful to him.

    3. I absolutely agree with you, Debeney. Each generation gets more and more advanced as the days go by. The mother or father should have been around their kids when this accident happened.

I am very positive that his sister was grateful to have him around and saving her life.

Maybe if the parents were there they wouldn’t have to worry about little kids calling 911. It was a good thing that the little boy had the knowledge to dial 911 and be able to get help just in time for his sister. Something else could have happened, it could have been even worse than what it was.

  7. In my mind children are more experience with calling 9-1-1 now than past generations were. As time passed parents realized that more crimes and accidents are occurring more often so they decided to teach their children at an early age on who to call and what to do when an incident occurs.

  8. I believe young children are getting experience for calling 911 nowadays. The reason they experience 911 is because some parents teach their children when to call 911 in case of an emergency. It was a good think that the nine year old boy calls 911 to save her sister from shocking on a grape. Nowadays is important to teach our children how to use the phone for an emergency and know what to do when incident occur.

  9. I think that children today are more experience with 911 today. This is because today there is a lot of things that kids take in, and they learn. Today's social media is almost on the spot with everything, and kids have access to tons of information. This is why I think that kids are more experience with communicating, through many ways, such as this, like through the phone. Also they are able to call 911 because as I stated earlier they learn a lot of information that can help them in the future with situations like this.

Their knowledge is ten times greater than ours because they already know how to work a tablet and some adults do not. This nine year old was able to save his sister without panicking that was really brave of him. Young children should be taught how to react and what to do in case of an emergency. By the looks of it, they already know. I think if it was any other person they would have panicked first then reacted. When the children are old enough their parents teach them about 911 and when they should call the authorities. By then they know right from wrong, so they are really experienced.

The way that the young boy came to the rescue by dialing 911 lets everyone know that even tho he was a nine year old he was able to follow instructions and save his sister. Therefore i believe that yea kids are aware of dialing 911 when needed and are more advance than us older generation.

Young children should be taught how to react and what to do in case of an emergency. By the looks of it, they already know. I’m not saying its bad because think about it if that kid hadn’t called 911 his sister could of probably been dead or in serious conditions in the hospital, 911 can tell you what to do in situations like this even if they are not physically their. The first instinct of a child is to help their parents if they are in danger or hide from a threat. They do not think of calling the cops until an adult says to call them. 73. I do believe that children have become more experienced with technology now. There are more programs now to help teach kids about safety, and how to call for help if there ever an any trouble.

  75. I believe that children are more experienced when it comes to dialing 911. With all of the danger, and crimes that have been occurring such as school shootings, kid napping’s, etc. Being aware of all of the incidents that do involve children, they have to be aware of when something’s wrong, or know who to go to when they have a problem. There for younger children are more experienced when it comes to contacting 911.

  76. I do really think that younger children these days are more experienced in using 911. I remember they would always show us videos in school for us to remember 911 as the number to call in an emergency. Kids are getting smarter in understanding when a situation becomes an emergency. Each generation after the next is getting more involved in advanced technology, learning to use phones just by using it after a while. It does not surprise me at all that his instincts told him to call 911 in this emergency.

  77. I believe that children are more experienced on how to use 911. It doesn't matter where the kid comes from or their background. Any good and responsible parent will teach their kids how to be safe if they're not present. Nowadays, there are a lot of different kinds of danger in our societies. The young boy did the most correct thing there is to do at that moment of trouble.

  79. This depends on what the child has learned. If the child has learned about precautions and what to do if an incident like this would occur, then yes. But if not, then unfortunately the child would not know what to do.
