Hello everyone,
I hope all is well.
Hence, welcome to week four of the CJ forum, it is my hope each of you will enjoy
the noted crime which transpired September 23, 2014. This was truly a tragedy I
feel could have been avoided but as we all know the CJS can reactive verse proactive.
Ms. Harrell
On September 23, 2014 in
Inglenook, Alabama an employee that had been recently fired opened fire at his former
place of employment which was the local UPS store. Prior to the shooting the
suspect appeared at his prior place of employment wearing his UPS uniform so he
would not be noticeable. Hence, it was noted by the time the police responded to
the call the shooting had concluded with the death of three people including the
gunman that reportedly took his life. Additionally, the two victims are
believed to be higher-ranked employees; however, no one knows the gunman’s
motivation for the shooting.
Furthermore, police said there
were no other suspects and the shooting in currently under investigation, it should
be noted that the preliminary investigation has concluded that the shooter knew
exactly who he wanted to target. Also, a similar killing happened in April
where a FedEx worker wounded 6 people in Georgia before taking his own life.
1.
Do
you think businesses or agencies should revamp/revise their practices in
regards to background checks for their applicants? Why or why not?
2.
What
can the businesses do to prevent that any of their employees from returning to
retaliate because they have been fired? Please keep in mind as noted above the
terminated employees often returns and the results are deadly or injuries so
what could be done differently if anything to ensure this does not transpire
again?
I really do believe that business companies should revise their applicant’s history and also do a practice on them to see what they know and how they do it. That way the employer can get an idea of how the applicant works and just to make sure they’re not hiring a maniac. I believe a good solution to a situation like this would be, having all the former employees to have a certain pass code, like a picture I.D., to scan when letting them inside the building. Additionally, showing them if they are active to work or not. So the people that come back thinking they can get in just like that because they have their uniforms, they won’t. I think it would be safer to just be more organized with their employees.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with you Adriana they should do a practice on them and make sure they are hiring someone that will help the company not harm it.
DeleteI get what you mean by observing their future employees, but I do not think it can give them real insight on who they are hiring. What you are suggesting sounds more like training. I would probably give them psychological test in order to be more aware of who I will hire. That way there’d be a less chance of me hiring a murder.
DeleteHello..
DeleteI agree with you. A practice on the employee should be taken so sow if he/she would be any harm to others. Also the companies should be more vigilant and secure of their workers to see if there is someone there who shouldn't be.
DeleteI strongly agree with you because the company should be more cautions on who they hire and maybe take more time with people's background checks . They can maybe prevent all this by looking out for people they hire or people they fired. This can prevent more situations like this happening.
DeleteI completely agree with Juanita. Giving them tests before giving the people jobs. It will make the job a whole lot safer due to the tests.
DeleteI agree with you on the companies adding something like the picture I.D. in order to be more organized with their employees. However, I also agree with what Juanita said about the hiring process you suggested sounding more like some type of company training, the physiological test would be a lot more efficient in learning about the applicant.
DeleteI agree with Juanita, anybody can pass or complete a "practice" with no hesitation. The companies need to do a psychological test to insure that the future employees are sane and won't eventually turn on them. They need to insure that the future employee is mentally stable.
DeleteThat's a wonderful Idea! An id that you swipe to get inside of the building sounds great. But what if they kill another employee and take their badge to get inside? It's really risky.
DeleteThat's a really good idea. That way people who no longer work there can't get in and harm people. That's also good point Jona, but it still doesn't hurt to give it a try.
DeleteI agree with Adriana. Doing a thorough search into the background of their applicants, also the test Adriana mentioned would be a great precaution to take when hiring someone.
DeleteI highly agree that companies should a do a deep background check on the people they are going to hire. In that case you will see if that specific person has a clean record with no police involved. To prevent anything of happening have highly security only people that work there can get in , another thing is take their uniform from them so they can’t try to fool a security.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteI agree with you Alejandro, companies should increase their security and removed the uniforms from the people they fire. That way they can’t trick anyone into believing that they still work there. However, when they remove the uniform should they pay them back the money they paid for it? Because I assume they bought it with their own money. Unless the company gave it to them and put that they must return it upon dismissal as a regulation.
DeleteI agree with you Alejandro. Companies should get their uniforms back so their former employees can't come back and cause damage.
DeleteI agree with you Alejandro, the company should run background checks on their employees just for the safety of the staff and the rest of the company. Also I agree with you on the idea that the company should reclaim the uniform from the now former employee so they can’t fool anyone if they try to do anything.
DeleteI agree with you Alejandro because people can just go in and out without security knowing they work there or not . They should be more cautions on they uniforms and maybe putting more security to see who comes in and out .
DeleteI agree Alejandro. Them getting a back ground check will give them more detailed information about that person .
DeleteI also agree with you Alejandro, a thorough background check should be established for every applicant during the hiring process; this would really lower the chances of an incident like this to reoccur. Your idea of uniforms having to be returned when someone no longer works for the company is great and should be enforced.
DeleteI disagree about the background checks. A person with a clean background can always go crazy at any point in time in my opinion.
DeleteI agree with you Alex. They should do back ground checks and at least a mental evaluation to see if they're sane. It's also a good idea to take back the uniforms that they issue to the employees. The only problem with that is that sometimes the companies make you have to buy them, so they really can't take it away from you.
DeleteI agree with you they should check there back ground because companies want to hire people they can trust not people that are going to harm you.
DeleteBusinesses could revamp their background checks if they’d like, but I do not believe it’ll make a difference. I will assume that they had run a background check on the employer they fired before they hired him to make sure he was clean. Yet, he still went back to the UPS office and opened fire on two innocent people. I believe that even if you run a highly background check, you can still trigger something in peoples brains that could possibly cause them to kill. As for the second question, like I commented before if you trigger something in people there is the possibility that it’ll be deadly. I suppose that the best solution is that when you fire someone you should be careful how you tell it to them. That way they won’t get angry and decide to get revenge. You could also increase your security, like have an I.D. scanner before entering the building. So the scanner could see if you still work there, if not it’ll deny you entrance.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Juanita, I also think that the managers should watch the way they fire someone. Most managers take advantage of their position & think it's ok to scream at their employees. They should treat everyone equally.
DeleteI agree with you Juanita, the employer should handle the way he or she fires someone with care and with close attention. When the employee is fired in a rude and unprofessional way there could be some back fire.
DeleteI agree with you Juanita, the employer should be smart with what he says to an employee when he/she fires them. I also think they should revamp the background check
DeleteI also agree with Karla. If you're going to fire somebody watch what you say because you never know what the person is capable of. Some people are really smart to just get what they want they dont care what might happen to themselves or others.
DeleteYes because you need to watch what kind of people you higher because they can have a bad background and you don't want to have someone like that working in your job. Make a machine that can scan your ID card were you work at and if you've been fired the door wont open to let you in to your job.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with that. Why people make it so complicated on the companies.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI believe that companies should do a extensive background checks to ensure that they are not going to hire a criminal that have a history of anger related crimes. the employer should also have in mind that some people might seem like their fine but in reality any little thing can send them in a angry state of mind that can blind them and make them do things to harm others at don’t realize it until it already done but by that time it’s too late and they have to face the consequence which sometimes leads to them taking their own life To ensure that the employees of the company are safe the employer should add a door that can only be open the people at the front desk and have visitors wear a badge with their name and picture. The employer should also have like a plan or a guide line to give employees in case something the shootout happened.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you Tony. They should check their workers background. You supposed to do this because you don't know what kind of person you are hiring. That's why it's very important to do a background check.
DeleteI strongly believe that companies should always do a criminal background check on every employee they are considering to hire. It'll just show that they are not hiring a murderer or a lunatic if they do so. To ensure that existing employees are safe, they should increase the security level, have bulletproof doors and windows, lock codes on doors so intruders can not go on a rampage and kill everyone, and also have employees wear their badge that was given to them when in the process of being hired.
ReplyDeleteI also think that they should increase their security level. Having bullet proof windows might be a great idea. Increasing the amount of security guards should be something they should do.
DeleteI don't think a background check will tell if someone has a mental illness and if they do it is against the law for the company to not hire someone because they find out about their illness. The best way to solve this problem is by going to the root of the problem which updating our gun laws.
DeleteI agree with an increased security level; however I think bullet proof doors and windows are an extra, unnecessary expense for the business. Most shootings happen inside the business, not from the outside.
DeleteI also agree on more security. The more secure the job is the less crimes will happen. It will be safer for the workers and anyone in the building.
DeleteI agree about knowing who the company is hiring. I'm sure no one wants to hire anyone with a murder on their background
DeleteI agree with they should always do a criminal background check before hiring because you never know you might be working with criminal and not even know it.
Deleteon be half Francisco, I think that he did wrong because the employees are consider to hire not to be a criminal that has a record that why i think he needs to go to jail
ReplyDeleteYes, I do feel companies should really review the worker who there trying to employed to be 100% sure that he is fit to work amongst others. Also, companies should be more secure of their businesses to be sure that people who don't belong there don't go in and cause havoc and harm to others.
ReplyDelete20B
ReplyDeleteI think companies should really check on the worker who are getting hire. Also, once the employer has been fired, they should keep a look out in case he come with a gun. In the world we live in, companies and factory are tough. I could see why who get fired seek revenge on something. Revenge is never the answer.
I totally agree with that bro. But he committed suicide. In fact, he should go to prison for what he did.
ReplyDeleteI think they should revamp back up checks , because you never know who you working with. The guy next to you, might be a serial killer, or even worst than that.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Simon that we should do background checks. You never know who you're going to deal with in the future. This may save people's lives.
DeleteI agree with you Simon. They should revamp background checks because you never know who you may be dealing with.
DeleteI believe that they should do back up checks. People are crazy these days. You should know the person you are employing . HE should not seek revenge. Obvioulsy he was fired for a reason. Revenege is never the asnwer.
ReplyDeleteSimon is right the guy could be a serial killeer or a felon.
ReplyDeleteI beleive with karissa you should also increase the security level.
ReplyDeleteI honestly believe that doing a background check on everyone is a good idea. So that all the employers can feel safe going to work every single day without fearing anything. Interviews shouldn't be the only thing that they should in-order to higher someone.
ReplyDeleteTo prevent another dramatic incident to happen again. All employees should have a pass code in-order to get in the building. Having security guards would also be a great idea.
I do agree with you on the extra security. I'm sure background checks would make people comfortable however it is not realistic for companies to conduct one on every employee.
DeleteI agree with Aide Duarte that doing a background check is a good idea. You may not know who you're dealing with but this will get you some idea of who this person is.Also i agree that the employees should have a password to get in that way it will be much harder to get in.
DeleteI agree with you, security guards would provide additional safety for the employees.
DeleteThe employee, if he was still alive, should receive life in prison without the possibility of parole. In my opinion the agencies/businesses should have background check on their employees just to assure that they are not hiring someone that can be a potential threat to everyone in the work environment. Sure there will be complaints about the invasion of privacy and such, but there is no such thing as too safe. Another thing that businesses could do to ensure the safety of the employees is to start putting up metal detectors when an employee checks into work every day. There is no harm in checking if the employees have anything that can endanger anyone else in the work place, so there is no real excuse to not be safe.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Cesar, they should cent him to prison without the possibility of parole.
DeleteI think that putting metal detectors would help reduce the chance of something like this from happening again.
DeleteWhats wrong with invasion of privacy if the something tragic would happen of others? Yes a good analysis on the background check would be helpful for the safety of the environment
DeleteI agree with you Cesar. The agencies should do a background check and make sure they are not hiring someone who is a potential threat.
DeleteI love the idea of medal detectors. As much as we students hate going through them everyday, they're necessary and perhaps if that DPS store had medal detectors, there wouldn't be three dead people. There's no need for weapons at the DPS. Increasing safety everywhere will prevent crimes.
DeleteI agree with you. Companies should do background checks at random on suspicious individuals. They should do whatever they need to do in order to provide a safe environment for the public. I believe safety should be what companies should care about the most. The metal detectors are a great idea. It can stop a worker from causing harm to anyone else once they are inside the building.
DeleteI do not believe background checks will help because most people who do this do not have a criminal past. It is also important to note that it is very rare for a person to react to getting laid off by opening fire at their workplace. Companies might be able to find a better way to lay people off so that it it not as painful as it has to be.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ashley, there shouldn't be a back ground check for a job like that.
DeleteI aggree, 8 out of 10.
DeleteI agree with Ashely most people who react this way do not have a criminal backgrounds.
DeleteEven though most people who do this do not have a criminal background it will be nice to do it for those few who do have it. It may not do a lot but its a start.
DeleteI don't believe that businesses should have a back ground check, I don't see the necessary for a job like that should make there employee or those who's applying should have a back ground check. Despite the incident that happened managers/bosses should realize how to lay off someone or how the reaction they make, so over all the way they should prevent that from happening is by respectfully by laying the man/women off in a better manner.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with you. I think businesses should do random background checks just to secure the safety of the public. It is becoming more common for workers to go shoot at their pervious jobs. As that being said, managers should be able to know how to handle that kind of situation. They need to know the correct way to lay off someone so they don't come back to the company and go on a shooting rampage. They also need to take away the individual’s uniform to prevent them from blending in with the rest of the crew.
DeleteYasmin is totally right take away the uniforms after the individual has been fired and that would make it much more complicated for them to gain access. Also the random background checks is a good idea because a person may have a clear back ground when you first hire them then as time progresses the individual may be arrested or taken into custody for some reason.
DeleteI don't think they should revamp their practices in regards to background checks. Although I do think they should revise/reconsider/review them to seek out potential flaws, if any at all. My reasoning behind this is simply that these incidents are rare although it should be noted that I don't work in these agencies and this is probably why I shouldn't. In terms of what I think they should do to possibly prevent this from happening again, I'd say to make sure they fully understand why they're getting fired and that it is necessary. Do it in as much of a positive way as you can. Don't yell at them, tell them it's all their fault and that they'll never get employed again. That's just mean.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jorge if the employees get fired in a nice and respected way then they will not feel the need to retaliate against the business they were working with. The employees have the right to know why they are being fired for. Most don't understand what they did wrong and take things in a personal matter which makes them want to lash out even though it is not justifiable.
DeleteI think that they should revise their practice because it would help eliminate the obviouse flaws. Even though the company takes background checks I dont think this will help much. Mainly because people cope with things differently and can seem normal at times but then snap for any reason. So I think that in order to prevent something like this from happening again I think the boss should review and reconsider the way he fires people.
ReplyDeleteYes, i agree whith eleazar because bosses need to know how to treate a sichuation better
DeleteI do think they should do background checks for the applicants because if they didn't do background checks it could have been much worse. This is just a reason to see who or what kind of person they may be before hiring them. The business can have better tighter security measures so the former employees won't come seeking for revenge. They should have a guard in the front because it sounded people can just come in and out as if it were nothing. They could have some sort of electronic device for the employees to get in,this way the incident couldn't happen again. Once they are fired the electronic device would expire. Nobody could get in without it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Ariana Flores, backgroungd checks are really important to help the working enviornment to be less dangerous. And like i said the employees should have some kind of entrance code to be able to come in.
DeleteI think that businesses should make a background check before hiring any new employee. They should make sure that they are hiring some one that fits all the requirements for the job. Therefore, they won't have the need to fire anyone. Different businesses should make their employees wear an ID so they can know that they belong to that corporation/business. They can also put a code on the door so they can be able to either swipe their ID card or have them us a pin number to have access into the building. Another thing they can do to avoid having any former employees come back and retaliate is that they can let them go, fire them, in a nice way and they can also give them like a week noticed or something like that.
ReplyDeleteI agree with checking the background of the employee. Businesses shouldn't be hiring any random person. They should know what type of person they are associating with. However, there's really no other way of nicely laying someone off.
DeleteYes, I agree that they should have a pin or swipe their ID to have access into the building so that any random person can't get in. Also I agree that background checks should be done so that applicants can fit the requirements for the job.
DeleteIn order to avoid a situation like this from happening, companies should run background checks on every employee. Background checks prevent a business from hiring someone who would do harm to others. Businesses should learn about the applicant’s past and if they have ever been in trouble. Even if the applicant has a minor charge against them, it could turn into something much bigger. To prevent any employees from returning for retaliation, each employee should have an identification card that they have to scan in order to get in. I know of many companies who use this system. If the employee is fired, their badge should immediately be deactivated.
ReplyDeleteYes indeed we would have to analyze the background check to see what kind of person. Also that ID's should be useful in entering the building being an employee.
DeleteYes Maddy, I strongly agree that they should have an identification card that they have to scan and yes they should be deactivated immediately if they're fired.
DeleteI agree with you Maddy. Employees who are terminated from the job should have their badge taken away. It'll benefit in the long run, so employees can not come back into the company and be disguised as a ''current employee'' and do damage.
DeleteI believe in this tragic cause that they're should be a complete backround check. Analyze it thoroughly enough to see if there's a bad reputation of this person. For businesses to prevent this of happening I believe a line of security inside theyre jobs if a former employee has entered. Also that if the actual employees recognize the former employee to alert others
ReplyDeleteI agree with Javier, background checks should be enforced. As he also stated, a line of security should be placed to help avoid this situation. If other employees recognize the former employee, they should indeed contact others.
DeleteThis is a tragedy, I believe that every employee should get a background check. The businesses should really look into that person and see if they have any bad reputation. To prevent anything like this to happen to their business I think there should be security cameras and there should also be someone who can recognize the former employee.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Karla, every employee should receive a back ground check. It's the businesses' job to know what kind of employee the are hiring.
DeleteMost businesses already have cameras installed to see if something bad is happening. I believe that monthly background checks should be done to ensure that the employees haven't committed any criminal activities.
DeleteBack ground checks for future employees should be mandatory. I liked your idea of having like a "security personnel "that lets employees into the facility.
DeleteBusinesses and agencies should already be conducting thorough background checks on their employee applicants. To ensure that the employee is still eligible for the job, once hired, the employer should conduct monthly background checks on their employees. There should also be medal detectors that everyone must go through daily to protect everyone in the building. There's no need to bring medal weapons into a UPS and as well as other businesses. Once an employee is retired or released, the employer should make sure to take any keys, uniform, or ID from the former employee so that he/she won't have access into the building or property. Security guards should be placed at the front and back entrances asking for ID. This way, no former employees can come in.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Lourdes that businesses should conduct background checks each month. I also agree that all former employees should return their uniform and all equipment that were given to them when they started.
DeleteI agree that they should have and extent background check. It is probably expensive for the company to have background checks for every employee every month. Yet, it is better to be safe than sorry. It will take away power and ideas away from the former employee if their uniform is taken away from them.
DeleteI agree with you also they should return everything before getting fired. It's crazy how people are now a days they just hurt people for simple things.
DeleteI agree with you, buesness should conduct backgrounds checks before anyone is hired. Also, I like your idea of having medal detecters.
DeleteYes, I believe that businesses and agencies should revise there background checks. The reason why it should be revised is so that this kind of incidents can be avoided. The way that businesses can avoid this after the person is fired is that they can advise there security. If there security is advised then they can ask them to leave. The place of business would be a lot more safe afterwards.
ReplyDeleteYes,i do think businesses and agencies should revise their practices in regards to background checks for their applications to make shure thay do not hire bad criminals. Businesses can also hire extra sercuertiy for more protection. Thay can give the people thay fire restreaning orders.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you Mathew. It would be a great idea to put restraining orders against those they fire. It would also help if they hired more security guards.
DeleteI do not agree with you Mathew. Considering it will take time to put a restraining order on every fired employee and not all fired employees act in this manner.
DeleteI recommend that businesses and agencies should change their methods of doing background checks. They should question the applicants if they have a gun license or if they own a weapon. They should also ask them if they have been fired from a previous job and if they went back to that job after being fired. The businesses should tell the people that have been fired that they're not allowed to return and to return their uniform back to the employer.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the agencies should have a deep background check on every employee. That type of information is important to be known. Also, I agree that the former employee should turn in his or her uniform. That can actually prevent from another tragedy to occur.
DeleteI agree that they should do background checks on employee, so they can know if the person's record is clean,
DeleteBusinesses should have a thoroughly background check. They should have one at least every three months. This is a way they can have a better idea of who is working with for them. After they fire an employee, they should have more security until it seems that no harm will be caused. Also, businesses should have strategies or plans of what to do if a situation like this would happen. The other employees should not have to pay with their own life for other people's personal issues.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Zaira. A background check every 3 months is really good. I also agree that businesses should having some type of strategy or plan if this ever happened again.
DeleteYes, I believe that businesses and agencies should revise their practices in regard to background checks. The reason being is so these types of incidents won’t occur. Businesses can avoid this from happening after firing someone by advising their security guards to be on the lookout. The security guards can then ask them to leave or take matters into their own hands . It would also be wise to have restraining orders against those they fire.
ReplyDeleteBusinesses and agencies should revise their practices in regards to background checks for their applicants. They should be done often to make sure who you're hiring and to make sure they have a clean record. Employees should have an ID to get in and once they're fired they should be taken away. Also, companies should have more security so that incidents like these won't occur. Employees shouldn't have to lose their life for some maniac.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Alejandra. Businesses and agencies really have to revise their practices in regards to background checks. Also it is important that once the employer is fired they should have their ID taken away from them.
DeleteI agree with you Alejanda. I believe the employee's should get a id and if they are fired it should be taken away.
DeleteI agree with Alejandra, employees should have an ID in order to get in work and have it taken away when they are fired. It would make it a safer place.
DeleteI do think it would be good and a lot safer for business companies to do a background check on their applicants. Also they should do a practice on them so the employer can have some sort of idea on how the applicant works, and to see if they are really suitable for the job. To ensure that this type of accident doesn't happen again in the future employees should have some type of identification ID at all times while working, and to have a more efficient security system. Also some type of security system that keeps doors locked at all times and the only way to open them is by a code.
ReplyDeleteI strongly recommend the companies not only do a background check but also do a self evaluation test. They can put the employee in a difficult situation and see how they react. On the actual job site they can pay more attention to the security cameras to see who's on the property and if they pose as a threat.
ReplyDeleteThe idea of a self evaluation test seems like a good idea. I also agree that they should pay close attention to the security cameras to see who is entering the building.
DeleteI totally agree with you Chris. A self evaluation check is something that should be required on a lot more jobs. Criminal background does not describe the person as a whole. Who knows how an applicant reacts to a certain situation.
DeleteI agree with you Chris. Not only should companies do a background check, but they should also do a self evaluation test. It'll show what the employee is capable of doing.
DeleteI believe by putting more security and maybe being more cautions this would prevent accidents like this to occur more often once a company fires somebody they should be aware of who goes in and out . They should have ids or some type of identification for security could know who's going in and out of the place . When people get terminated or fired they shouldn't be allowed nowhere near the location to prevent any type of accident . In the future they should do more background check for other employees safety and also the companies.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Jackie, employes should have some form of i.d. And also some type of log of who enters and leaves the building. However go as far as making sure any personal that have been fired no where close to the place is a little bit to much.
DeleteI agree with you because employees should have some kind of identification so they can be identified.
DeleteIn my opinion the companies do have to revamp their policies with background check. I know most people wouldn't like the invasion of their privacy but once people realize that it's for a good safety reasons most people will over look it. Also to prevent any other casualties there should metal detectors and all employes have to pass through it to get to work. As another safety precaution there should be a guard on duty and have a list of the personal who have been fired to look out for just in case. One way the businesses could also help is by firing someone in a more gentle and kinder manner.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Juancarlos. To prevent an incident like this there should be metal detectors and some kind of information regarding current and former employees. I also believe there should be security on duty so prevent any suspicion.
DeleteI agree with you Juancarlos. A more 'protected' business will make a more 'safe' business.
DeleteI agree with Juancarlos, having a guard on duty with a list of the people who have been fired would prevent an employee that has been fired to retaliate.
DeleteI agree with you the more security and people having a identification on them all the time can make the business more safe. It well help prevent these crimes from happening.
DeleteI believe that every company should do a background check to people who try to file for employment. This should be done because the business needs to know who they are hiring and what kind of background do they have. The employees should have ids on so that they can be identified and to show that they work there. They should have security guards check the employees in for work so they can have a good verification that they work there,
ReplyDeletePeople today are capable of doing anything despite of their criminal background. There should be more security that way all current employees are cleared through the companies system. Thus, preventing any terminated or former employees to threaten any customers or employees. Who would have thought this would be the outcome of following company policies by terminating an employee. Background checks only inform a company of an applicant’s criminal history it does not shed any light on the individual’s personal life and what they may be going through. If there were metal detectors, it would have prevented the shooter from entering the building with a deadly weapon. Another way of preventing this incident would have been to confiscate all the former employees’ uniforms that way some type of suspicion would be raised.
ReplyDeleteI Agree. I believe that a background check can only tell you so much but getting to know about an individuals personal life can tell you much more about what an individual is capable of doing. Also having metal detectors is a safe way to keep employees safe on the job and a way to keep ex-employees or anyone else to come around with a weapon or anything dangerous.
DeleteWhile working for this company you must pass several tests. We can't just let anyone get these jobs. More and more crimes Are happening due too lack of security.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Gavin. There has been a lot of business crimes due to the lack of security. Maybe this situation will send a message to business owners.
DeleteWe need to learn how the minds of people who shoot up places. Without this knowledge, this trend will continue.
DeleteI feel as if all business should do back ground checks on their employees. If teachers need to have one before being hired, then everyone else should get one. Just because that person had a good resume or referred to by someone else doesn't mean you just hire them. Looks can be deceiving. Businesses should also have a rule where once you check out or clock out, then you can not come back unless asked to. Also business like UPS with uniforms should request their return of uniforms upon termination.
ReplyDeleteIt's not about background checks it's about the person mental state. They could have a clean record and still be able to do cruel things.
DeleteI agree with you Alyssa, looks can be very decieving and everyone should conduct a background check before hiring someone. I think that business shouldn't demand their uniforms back.
DeleteYes, businesses or agencies should revise background checks for their employees for the safety of the other employees. Businesses should know about the applicant’s past and if they have ever been in trouble, it will avoid any situations like this from happening. What businesses can do to prevent any employees returning to retaliate that have been fired is for each employee to have an identification card and activate it while they have the job. Each time they start work, they slide their card in a scanner by the entrance door. When they are fired, they deactivate that identification card and they would not be allowed to go back in. Also having security guards, they should have a list of workers and non-workers and check each employee as they go in.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Miriam, checking a person's background is important. I also like the idea of the identification card, having security check that.
DeleteI agree with you on having to check every person they are hiring a background check no matter what situation there is and making sure they have prove that is them.
DeleteI agree with you on having all the employees check because it would decrease a chance of a incident from happening.
DeleteInstead of focusing more on background checks, employers should have a psychological evaluation. People could have a clean record and still cause harm to society without having a motive. This would benefit the workplace knowing you aren't working with a sociopath. If you do fire a employe and if they have a violent past then should be warning to the security and employees. This would help avoid tragedies like the ones that occurred.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jasmine. I agree with her on the psychological test. I feel as this test would play such a big factor into employing new people because it isn't letting anybody in.
DeleteI believe that businesses and agencies should check a person's background before hiring them because they should know what kind of person they are and what they have done before. I think that when a business fires somebody they should ask for thier uniform, thier id badge and make sure that they are not allowed back in the building.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Luis every person should get their background checked. You don't know what kind of person they are hiring. They might be a crazy person that has done bad things in the past. Like you said they should remove all those items from him and never let him in the building again.
DeleteYes every business or agency should do a background check. This is important because you never know who are you hiring. You might be hiring a crazy psychological person and you don't even know it. This is why every agency or business should do this. In order to prevent this I would probably fire the worker in a good manner. The owner of the agency probably fired the worker in a bad way ,and that's what made the guy mad. He probably didn't think it was right that's why he probably killed those people.
ReplyDeleteEvery business should always look toward hiring the most suitable employee for a safe environment in the work place. Next to doing a thorough background check on every applicant a physiological test should be enforced. This will ensure that not only has the person not been i trouble with the law before but they are less likely to do so in the future. In addition, I really liked the idea of the uniforms that one of my peers mentioned. By making ex-employees return their work uniforms it is less likely that an incident like this would reoccur and it would be a lot less confusion to distinguish employees and any other person who doesn't belong there.
ReplyDeleteI Agree. Physiological test are a great idea to do before hiring. Also, Returning uniforms is a smart idea. if someone who doesn't have a uniform on shouldn't be around the job. You will be able to tell the difference between who works there and who doesn't.
DeleteI agree too on the uniforms because that way the person who got terminated can't go back looking similar to the others and cause an incident.
DeleteI somewhat agree with you Jose. No one is less likely to get in trouble with the law because sometimes things just happen. They should still run the test but on depending what they find out about a person they should choose to hire.
DeleteEvery business place should always have a background check when hiring a employee to see any criminal background. The reason why it's important to do that is because you just never know who you are hiring in the business position. Also, if they have a clean background that doesn't mean they are good people people change from one day to another. So therefore they should keep in watch on the employees
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Yessica, the background checks are vital to have when t comes to hiring new people. They never know if they have a criminal past. It is also true that employees can also experience changes throughout their life causing them to change the way that they are.
DeleteYes, you are correct, every company or agency should be a lot more strict with their employers and security to prevent things from happening. Another thing they can do though, is have a background check every 6 months just to double check the employers have not done any unethical things they shouldn't have done.
DeleteBackground checks are necessary but i think its according to the job that a person is applying for. Even though they do let the employer know who they are hiring they can also prevent people, who are trying to start over, from getting jobs. I think that in order for incidents not to happen the employer should have a reasonable reason to fire them. Also they should fire people in good terms. Some people do get mad if you fire them in bad terms and they turn to revenge.
ReplyDeleteBusiness should always take caution in the employees they hire. All business should do deep background checks on everyone. It's Important to know criminal history because you don't want to end up hiring a murder or something. Business should completely terminate a ex employee from being near or on the work site. That would be a safe thing to do and it will also keep other employees safe.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you jasmine. The thing is, I don't think a restraint will keep a very angry person away. If they want to harm someone, trust me, they'll find a way to act out their revenge. A restraint is just a paper. Maybe they could add some security to these businesses and they can check if that person on site actually works there.
DeleteI think that businesses should revamp their practices in regards to background checks. A lot of businesses nowadays will hire just about anyone to fill up the spot needed. We need to think about what kinds of people are inside of businesses. That's how companies end up getting a lot of shade when something tragic happens to or at their occupations. For instance, if a possible applicant has a record of theft and or violent abusive activity, it's probably not such a great idea to hire him or her. Even if a person has no criminal background, they can still end up doing something very irrational in the future. Businesses need to take more time into investigating exactly who they are hiring. To prevent employees from returning, I think that businesses should take more caution into how they treat their employees. Those returning must have some sort of grudge against some people who still work their, so their should be a way to tame down any uprising inside of a business. At my job, if anyone feels they need to complain or speak out about anything they don't like in the store, we have a number we call, known as the "One Number." It's anonymous, but it really helps employees get things off of their chest if they feel that they have been mistreated. If the companies where to file a restraint on fired employees, the crimes would still be done, so there is no point in that. I doubt the people would care about any restraints if they're angry about something.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the company should have more protection. Many more people could've got hurt but he had targets he shot 2 employees and him self. They should make photo Ids for employees and let security who was laid off so nothing like this would ever happen .
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Lizbette that the company should have more security. I also agree that they should inform security of who has been fired and to make sure they don't go back.
DeleteYes, I do believe that businesses should revise their practices regards to background checks. Why it's important because you never what pople can do at work. Also, business should get more background checks, call the places they worked to see if there not living. When people go back to work to be more careful because all people get hurt. They should just keep business more protected.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the companies should do extensive background checks every six months on both future and present employees. Also along with the background check companies should do a psychological test to see if the individual is mentally stable. After being fired it has become a comman trend for individuals to seek revenge and I think companies make it so easy for them. The companies need to start taking away all badges, uniforms, and keys that the individual may have had. Doing so insure that the individual will not have access to anything on the companies property. And lastly the places need to be way more secure.
ReplyDeletePsychological tests might be just quite extreme Summer because you could usually tell who is sane or not by their normal behavior. I do I agree that they should do extensive background checks every six months on both present and future employees.
DeleteI agree with you summer because without those test unstable people will just get a job. More problems eill come if they hire unstable people. Background checks arent enough
DeleteSummer I love what you suggested for agencies to do. That is a great idea, if both present and future employers go through these procedures the bad things that go on would be prevented.
DeleteI agree with Summer. I feel as if psychological test she be mandatory. I also agree with summer on the company taking away all the badges along with the uniforms.
DeleteI agree with summer. It hadn't occur to me to have a psychological test done to the applicants, it sounds like a great idea. It would be a great idea.
DeleteI believe that business should revise their background checks because you never kno who you hire. Also sometimes you can hire a completely good person who goes by the book and follows the law like a good civilian, but something can go wrong in their personal life and cause that person to click. Therefore you can only do so much in background checks. As far as to prevent an employee who recently has been fired from causing harm to management, the agency really can't do anything about that because you don't really know who to look out for. The only thing they could do is hire an armed gaurd to be on standby 24/7.
ReplyDeleteI think that businesses or agencies should have deep back ground checks for the safe of their co-workers and the people receiving or buying the service, but a background check just shows the person from the outside but not the inside. I also think that people who get fired quit or whatever the case might be should return their uniform back to their agencies that way they can't try to go back and do something wrong.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, Victor. You can only see what a person shows on the outside but you don't know for sure how they are in the inside. They should definitely return their uniforms back to their agencies so they have no way of sneaking back in.
DeleteI agree with you, Victor. Although a background check does show information, it does not determine the intensions of an individual; whether they are good or bad. It is also agreeable that an employee from past times should return whatever utensils that were given to him or her, be returned. As I noted in another comment as you said, Victor, a background check should be applied and if an individual returns and his or her name is run through a system if the name pops out as an employee from previous times then there should be close surveillance in order to prevent bad things from happening.
DeleteI agree with you Steven, they do need to improve their security checks. And also who they fire, make sure don't come back.
ReplyDeleteWhen a business hires someone, they should automatically cunduct a strict background check. The reason for that is so the business could see more about the person they'll be handing their money to. Now with the security situation, every employee should be given a card to have access to the building. And when someone is layed off or retired, they should hand in their "entry card ." The samething should go whith the uniform.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Ramiro, businesses need to have strict background checks. This can help can help them to get to know the person. Businesses must also take their company things with them including the uniforms.
DeleteIn my opinion, I believe that businesses should proceed first with a background check before they hire someone. With this information, businesses can ensure that the person hired won't cause much problems. They should also keep record of how they look just in case anything else like this happens again. Businesses can also take people's uniforms away when they get fired.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Luis, with the background check businesses are ensure that the employee won't cause any problems. And taking away the uniform when fired would probably prevent this from happening.
DeleteI agree with you Luis that companies should take away uniforms from those who are fired. This way those fired employees won't be able to go back in the company and fit in so easily and do stuff like in this crime.
DeleteI agree with you, Luis. Every agency or business should have every new hired employee have a background check. This way they know a little bit about who they are working with. Also, when an employee is fired, they should return the uniform right away.
DeleteIn my opinion nanagers should know what kind of people is working at their company they cannot just hired someone and they dont know stuff about him. They should have more security so that way no other person comes and start killing other people like that guy did. They shouldnt provide a person who doesnt work there anymore on the job.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Josue, the manager should know who they are hiring before they hire. In case the person is a criminal or something. And for sure more security would help the business be more safe.
DeleteIn my opinion every agency and or business should do background checks to their employers or applicants. It is unknown if those two men went through a background check or not because of what they did. The importance of these background checks is extremely high; agencies should know who they are hiring period. One does not just hire any person who is applying for these jobs or any job. If there were no background checks, people who've done something illegal or bad will be around and things would go wrong. This male deserves life in prison with no possible chance of parole. What agencies or companies can do to prevent these things from happening is just not hire former employers back if they've been fired once I believe they should not be re-hired. By any means if the former employers were fired once I'm pretty sure they would have held some type of grudge towards the person responsible for firing them in the first place.
ReplyDeleteI believe that all companies should perform a back ground check also along with a psychological test. The reason I say they should perform a psychological test to see how they see things and how their brain seems to think. Something companies could also do to make sure if they feel a threat is being sent from a previous member that has been fired they can get a restraining order. I believe in strongly in giving fired members a restraining order because it will protect the company and the civilians.
ReplyDeleteI believe that all companies and agencies should do a background check on any employee before hiring. Because the employee probably has a bad background with maybe some crimes or anything. What businesses should do to prevent any issues with fired employees is fire for a good reason and try to it in the nicest way so the fired employee won't be mad.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Daniel that companies should do a background check so they know they aren't hiring some kind of criminal. But I disagree with the other part, there's way better options than those to prevent stuff like that to happen.
DeleteI believe companies should do a background check so they'll know if they aren't hiring someone that's probably been a criminal. This will ensure that the person won't be any harm to the company nor the other employees. Businesses should take away uniforms from those who are fired to prevent stuff like this to happen.
ReplyDeleteI dont think businesses should revamp anything. I believe that no matter how clean someone's background is, they can always so something crazy at any point in time. Businesses can get an on duty deputy at all business hours to make sure no former employees come to retaliate. The deluties would know who doesn't work there because of posted pictures of former employees who dont belong.
ReplyDeleteI understand your perspective Alex. It is very true how someone clean can randomly do something dumb. I believe that is always up to them, but I think background checks should keep being enforced. Also people have to pay more attention to details, so incidentsike this won't happen again. Businesses should always secure the safety of themselves and of their employees. Furthermore, a deputy on duty wouldn't be such a bad I dear Alex.
DeleteI think that the companies should revise there background checks because if they do not they will not know who they are hiring and what kind of people are working for them. An kind of potential danger you can be in or other workers working with side by side with him. Companies should also stop re hiring ex employees that have worked there before because there was a reason why there fired. Not because they did a good job. So companies need to be more careful the employees that they re hire because most of the times they come back to get revenge.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with you Paula. Checking employee's backgrounds is very important. Businesses should know who is coming in and out of their business. Also employers should be more careful because they aren't only putting their lives in risk, but also of the corporation.
DeleteBusinesses should revise their practices in regard to background check for their applications. Although it may not alwaysbe a person with a criminal bbackground committing a crime, businesses should revamp employees. I also believe that either the person was psychologically unstable or his employers were treated him badly which led to the incident. I think that businesses should get better security system to prevent employees from returning to retaliate. Maybe a change I'm how situations are handled. The offender probably had something going on and his boss ignored it and was not understanding. Also they probably offended the offender which led to the actions taken. Furthermore security system should be enforced more and employers should be more careful.
ReplyDeleteYes you're right Flor. It is not guaranteed someone who hasn't committed a crime won't. I also agree that he probably had a situation and the boss ignored him, though killing them is going to far. They should have better security to prevent any further incidents from happening especially involving a gun. Also employers should be more cautious when employing.
DeleteBusinesses and agencies should definitely revamp/revise their practices in regards to background checks for their applicants because they never know exactly how a person is therefore they need deep background checks to re assure they are working with a decent person. I don't think businesses can do anything to prevent their applicants from returning and causing damage again because they just never know who is going to do it or when it's going to happen.
ReplyDeleteI do agree Jackie, that the company or business will never know if that one person would ever come back and hurt them.
DeleteI believe businesses should revise their employees background checks so they can make sure nothing is to worry about at the moment. Sometimes their record is clear however, they should still watch their surroundings. To make the business more safe for the people I believe there should be more security for those purposes. They should also be aware of who enters and have cameras around the buildings. This would have to happen due to the many times ex workers endanger society.
ReplyDeleteBusinesses and companies should definitely do back ground checks just to make sure the future employee has a good record. It is also necessary to have them do a mental evaluation to see if they're sane. Just because they have a clean record doesn't mean they won't ever go crazy. It's also a good idea to take back the uniforms that they issue to the employees. The only problem with that is that sometimes the companies make you have to buy them, so they really can't take it away from you. Another good idea brought up was making the employees scan an i.d that shows if they are still currently employed or not. Some people will probably still find a way around it, but all this can at least decrease and slow down these sorts of attacks.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ana Ruth because I do believe that companies should check on a person’s medical recorded to mental purposes.
DeleteI agree with Anaruth the mental evaluation is a good tactic to use when hiring a new applicant. The idea of badges to scan is also good. yes some may find a way to get around the badge precaution, but a precaution is still useful.
DeleteI believe companies should go into depth on people’s background checks. Mainly one reason is because maybe the person that this company is about to hire has to take medication or maybe that person is known for hurting people, so it would be best for the company to double check their background. If the company decides to fire someone one thing they can do to prevent this person on coming back is to have all the new and old employees to own there own picture id. Another thing would be to have a new pass code every time a person has been fired so that it would prevent a from coming inside the building to hurt someone
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion the agencies/businesses should have background check on their employees just to assure that they are not hiring someone that can be a threat to everyone in the work environment. Sure there will be complaints about the invasion of privacy and such, but there is no such thing as too safe. There can also be security guards that can help a lot too. To prevent such things from happening
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! In order to keep an environment safe from incidents such as the one described, being too safe is not bad or wrong at all. There are cases in which people that have been fired return back and do bad deeds to have a payback from the humiliation or simply a payback to whoever they might have encounter that had done something mean to them. I think security guards is a good idea but also some type electronic system that lets a secretary or someone who is keeping surveillance at the front or entrance of a building, know who is the person and if he or she has been in past times an employee of the company.
DeleteI believe the companies when hiring an applicant should have a thorough procedure to the way back ground checks are applied. The type of questions an applicant are asked also should be specifically designed so the employer can witness what type of physiological stage the applicant is in.
ReplyDeleteI personally think, business or agencies should revamp or revise their practices in regards to background checks for their applicant’s .Reason for this is because in order to prevent things such as what happened from acquiring, background checks should be performed in order to insure the safety of others in the corporation. Knowing any criminal background information is useful for people hiring individuals that could be capable of doing anything with an intention due to something negative they’ve experienced. Businesses could have higher security when an individual enters. Perhaps keep the name and some information from a past employee and just save the document for future references in case the individual returns, there will be documents as information regards to the person as a warning in case the person had been fired from the business and might have negative intentions.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteI agree with you Julia. They should have higher security and be aware. How does one enter a company so easily with a gun? I also agree that a document should be necessary. It will inform another for when trying to hire an individual if they had any bad background.
DeleteI do believe businesses and agencies should revise their practices in regards to background checks for people they will hire. They should know who is going to represent them as an employee. Also, it prevents from people getting hurt or killed like in this issue. The bigger business' should pay more attention to this because their reputation goes down and it reflects on them in a bad way. In order to prevent this from happening any further, other employees must report any suspicious activity or they might think there is something wrong mentally with their co-worker. This may reduce this issue though not completely since some might hide it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Haline. Companies should be more organize. They shouldn't hire just any one. They should background checks on every single person they hire.
DeleteI really do believe that companies should revise their applicants history and also do a practice on them to see what they know and what they can do. That way the employer can get an idea of how the applicant works and just to make sure they don't hire someone that doesn't know what to do or an ex criminal. I believe a good solution to a situation like this would be having all the former employers have a passcode or a certain I.D that you can scan when entering the job site. Additionally showing them if they are active to work or not. So the people that come back thinking they can get in just like that won't get in just like that. It would be safer to be more organized with their employers.
ReplyDeleteI agree Israel they should have to scan an I'd or pass code. It will be safe for the company. They should do background checks as well.
DeleteI believe the business should start running background checks on applicants to check for criminal records. They should also do practices on them to see if they actually know how the job works. I believe they should have the employees go through metal detectors to make sure no one has weapons.
ReplyDelete
